NanoLeaf: The New Direction Of LED

NanoLeaf LED Feature Story
Nanoleaf, a green technology start-up, earned two acclaimed Red Dot Awards for its Nanoleaf One and Nanoleaf Bloom light bulbs, which were on display at the Hong Kong Int’l Lighting Fair – Spring Edition.

For the 2015 Red Dot Awards, an international panel of 38 experts from all over the globe evaluated 4,928 entries from 56 countries. Winners were selected based on the quality and innovative strength of each product.

“These 38 experts assessed the quality of the entries with the utmost care and attention,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of Red Dot. “Due to their backgrounds, they also assessed the special cultural aspects of the designs from [each country], but only the best products receive an award from the jury. This is especially reflected in the percentage of successful entries in the Red Dot Award, which is much smaller in contrast to other international design competitions. Therefore, the winners can be proud of their achievements – with their entries; they stood out from the rest and were able to pass the test in front of the critical eyes of the experts.”

Founded in 2012 by University of Toronto graduates Tom Rodinger, Gimmy Chu, and Christian Yan, Nanoleaf is a young start-up company with the mission of creating a more sustainable future. The three entrepreneurs consider themselves a family of fun, creative, passionate geeks committed to developing energy-efficient products that promote and encourage people to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. The firm’s co-founders raised $273,000 from 5,000 backers using the popular crowdsourcing Website Kickstarter to get its products developed.  Over the past few years, the company has grown to include offices in Toronto, as well as Guangdong, China and in Hong Kong.

“As a brand that constantly strives to bring the world planet-friendly products with people-friendly designs, we are extremely proud to be awarded the Red Dot Product Design Award,” said Gimmy Chu, Co-founder and CEO of Nanoleaf. “As consumers grow more and more environmentally conscious, we will continue to realize our creativity, pushing both technology and design forward to bridge the gap between lifestyle and green products.”

The Nanoleaf team is honored to accept the prestigious Red Dot Product Design Award,” said Christian Yan, Co-founder and COO of Nanoleaf. “Hopefully, this will be the first of many, as we have many more exciting and innovative ideas to share with the world.”

The award-winning products from the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 will also be presented in the Red Dot Museum – a special exhibition where visitors can have hands-on experience with the winning products from June 29 to July 26, 2015. This year’s Red Dot Museum houses the largest exhibition of contemporary design worldwide with approximately 2,000 exhibits spread over an area of more than 43,000 square feet.

At Nanoleaf’s booth at the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair, the company displayed its omni-directional LED Bloom bulb, which is reportedly the world’s first dimmable LED light bulb that does not need an external dimmer because its patented technology translates light switch signals into dimming commands. The Nanoleaf Bloom is available in E26 and E27 Edison-base versions that provide 1200 lumens and consume 10 watts. Bloom can be ordered in three colors: Arctic White, Charcoal Black, and Arctic Leaf.

In addition, the company featured its Nano One, which is available in two models:  the NL02-1600 with 1600 lumens, and the NL02-1800 with 1800 lumens.

On Earth Day, Nanoleaf debuted the Gem!  This LED décor bulb offers a light quality that is equal to incandescent , but has a frosted white glass finish similar to a traditional Edison bulb while keeping its unique shape.
