Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Mirror, mirror on the wall, you are the fastest-growing home décor segment of them all!

Not only is the category gaining popularity among homeowners, but many lighting showrooms are beefing up their selections to meet the need. Similarly, several lighting companies such as Quoizel, Kichler, and Pacific Coast Lighting have recently expanded their merchandise mix to include decorative mirrors that complement their lighting styles and finishes.

As scores of homeowners have downsized into smaller living quarters in the wake of the real estate crash, making rooms appear larger is a technique very much in demand. One of the best tools for accomplishing this is the strategic use of mirrors. In this issue, we present some of the latest styles available along with proven tips on how to arrange effective mirror displays in your lighting stores.

And where is one of the best places to shop for mirrors? The High Point Market, of course! If you’re heading to the giant home furnishings show, be sure to check out our special section in this edition listing the can’t-miss events plus new product introductions.
By adding mirrors and artwork or decorative accessories and occasional furniture to your assortment, your store will be maximizing its sales opportunities. One High Point, N.C.-area lighting showroom has done just that. Located in nearby Burlington, King Electric has broadened its mix to include Hunter Douglas blinds, accent rugs, and even wallpaper. King Electric’s owner, Jim King Sr. reveals how the process evolved in this month’s Retail Spotlight.

Unsure of whether adding wallcoverings is right for you? Read our feature story Climbing the Walls, which delves into the category in more depth with interviews from lighting experts. Even if you aren’t interested in selling wallcoverings, consider using it to add ambiance to your displays (there is even a temporary, peel-off wallpaper product available).

One more selling opportunity that is unique to this time of year is the end of Daylight Savings Time, when it gets darker earlier in the evening. With October designated as National Energy Action Month, the timing of both events is opportune for holding a promotion on controls, outdoor lighting, and energy-efficient bulbs.
